Is there a fix for when Chinese-type characters seem to "take over" the menu bar(s)?

Periodically, I notice that the menu bar has been "taken over" by these characters, making navigation and use of functions difficult or impossible. Closing the program and then reopening it sometimes fixes this for a while, but then it happens again. I believe I have the latest version 38.2.0.

It could well be anything McAfee... It has been a very problematical piece of software for some years. See https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues#McAfee

I don't know whether this is relevant to Thunderbird, but on Firefox, the McAfee SiteAdvisor extension can cause Chinese characters to appear on both sides of a tab. For example: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1054850 (includes user screen shot).

Can you check for that on the Add-ons page, Extensions section. If your Thunderbird does not normally display the Tools menu, you can activate the menu bar temporarily by tapping the Alt key.

Don't have Site Advisor enabled for T-bird. However, could this be related to the McAfee anti-spam extension? I've disabled that now to test. Thanks.
