Not new to Firefox. Problem occurs in safe mode with hardware acceleration turned off and about:config settings are correct. I would like to avoid having to do a fresh install to correct the problem. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Details like websites remembering you (log you in automatically) are stored in a cookie.

  • Create a cookie 'allow' exception to keep such cookies, especially in case of secure websites and when cookies expire when Firefox is closed.
  • Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: Exceptions

In case you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" or otherwise clear history:

  • do not clear the Cookies
  • do not clear the Site Preferences

Clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, passwords, and other website specific data.

Clearing cookies will remove all specified (selected) cookies including cookies with an allow exception that you would like to keep.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode (Never remember history).

  • Deselect: [ ] "Always use Private Browsing mode"

Not talking about logging in automatically, but just having Firefox fill in username and password. I do not use private browsing mode and have always had cookies cleared on closing but not saved passwords or site preferences.

Nevertheless I just changed settings exactly as you recommended and autofill of username and passwords is still not working in 35.0. There is a problem with this update.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} While you are in safe mode;

Type about:preferences#advanced<Enter> in the address bar.

Under Advanced, Select General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.

Poke around safe web sites. Are there any problems?

Type about:preferences#security<enter> in the address bar.

Under Passwords, select Remember. Check the passwords you have listed, press Saved Passwords.

Warning. There are some web pages that do not allow browsers to record or fill in the log-in information. But if you go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) you can find several add-ons that can override this, and give you better control of your password information. You can also try a Form Filling add-on.

You can check the signon.autofillForms pref on the about:config page and make sure that they have the default value. You can reset user set (bold) prefs via the right-click context menu to the default value.

Firefox won't auto-fill saved form data automatically when autocomplete=off is used and you need to start typing the name to get a drop-down list.

You can check for the presence of multiple, uppercase/lowercase, versions of this name and password and for entries with an empty name.

Thanks for the quick replies, but nothing recommended solved the problem. Filling in usernames and passwords worked fine until the update to 35.0. Using Firefox used to be a pleasure, now it is a chore, even using an addon like KeePass. Until the update all I had to do was click on the field to have username and passwords filled in automatically. From now on I will never upgrade until a new release has been out for a few weeks.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift (Mac Options) > key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

Start your Computer in safe mode. Then start Firefox. Try Safe web sites.

When I have time this weekend will delete 35 and go back to 33.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

OP states that first option I tried was safe mode. The problem is not due to an extension and I have never had hardware acceleration turned on. The problem seems to be in the new 35 release.

The form filling addons are nowhere as convenient as just having Firefox working properly. I plan on deleting 35 off and going back to 33.
