Your email was not Thunderbird since Thunderbird is not an email provider and only email providers issue email accounts. You may have used Thunderbird as an email client to manage your email account.

Your address book will be on your old computer unless you made a backup somewhere.

How about describing what you did to get your emails. How did you recover them?

Thunderbird address books reside on your hard drive. If your old drive does not work and you did not make a backup there is no other place to get the old address books.

Everything you post is duplicated or triplicated.

Thunderbird is an email client. It logs on to a mail providers server and collects you mail from that server . So your mail is Yahoo or Comcast or Gmail or whatever. It is not Thunderbird. If you do not delete the mail from that server when it is downloaded, it stays there for ever. Or until the space allocated is full and your provider dumps it.

If your computer lets out the magic smoke that makes it work then there is still a hard disk inside the old machine that contains your data. Unless it also went bang. What information is on your computer is yours, both as possession and as a responsibility to backup. No one else makes a copy just in case you loose it.

When you got your new computer and added your mail account the mail you had neglected to delete downloaded to your new machine. However your address book is still on the hard disk of your old machine. So unless you can access that drive your address book is gone for good.

Can you access your old hard drive? What version of windows did you have on your dead computer? Is TB (Thunderbird) set up as POP3 or IMAP? If you can access your old hard drive and you are moving from Windows XP to Windows 7 this may help. This works for POP3. I did not test for an IMAP account. If you have new email you can make a new folder on your desktop and drag them there, and drag them back into TB when you are done. Close TB (Thunderbird). Open Windows Explorer. Set "Folders and Search Options" to: "Show hidden files, folders, and drives", and uncheck “Hide protected operating system files” Click on Apply Click on Apply to folders and answer “Yes” Make two new folders on your desktop, name one Local, and the other Roaming. These will store what you have now in case this procedure does not work for you. Navigate to C:\Users\Username \AppData\Local\Thunderbird\Profiles\ Your profile will be something like “wu75z4zq.default”. I will use xxxxxxxx.default in this example.

Move all of the files in C:\Users\Username \AppData\Local\Thunderbird\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default to the” Local” Folder on your desktop. Move all of the files in C:\Users\Username \AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default to the “Roaming” Folder on your desktop. Now you will copy the old computer TB files to your Windows 7 computer. Respond Yes / Continue to the windows that will pop up as you do this. In this example, the old computer drive is F:\, and you will have to substitute your Windows user account name for “Username”. They may be different on the two different computers. Copy Win XP-F:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default To Win 7-C:\Users\ Username \AppData\Local\Thunderbird\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default Copy Win XP- F:\Documents and Settings\ Username \Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default To Win 7-C:\Users\ Username \AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default Now open TB and see if your email and address book is there. If everything is NOT as it should be, you can restore things the way they were by Deleting the files in: C:\Users\Username \AppData\Local\Thunderbird\Profiles\ xxxxxxxx.default And C:\Users\Username \AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default And then moving the files from the desk top folders back where they belong. If it looks like everything is OK, you can leave the desktop folders as they are and delete them in a few days after you are sure TB is good. Drag the emails you saved in the desktop folder back into TB. If they are already in TB it will make duplicates which are easily deleted. You can delete that folder after you are done moving the email. Whether or not this procedure worked, you should reset Windows Explorer: Go back to Folders and Search Options and click Restore Defaults Click on Apply Click on Apply to folders and answer “Yes”
