I asked this question before, but the answer I got was way too complicated. I keep being asked to upgrade to Firefox 29, and when I do go to do this I get the message "You are on the latest version of Firefox", even though I am on Firefox 24. Please tell me in simple language how to fix this.

Hi Ruben,

I'm sorry my answer wasn't easy to understand. I'll try to simplify it.

There are two reasons why your Firefox is incorrectly reading the useragent (the Firefox version you're on)

1) about:config (hidden website in Firefox) still has the preferences for an old version. There's only one thing to do for this step, Visit the below website and tell me what it says under Browser "User Agent" string:.
Here's the site:

Example: here's what mine looks like:

  • Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:29.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/29.0

If yours isn't 29 at the end you should do the below steps to reset your prefs to default

  1. Navigate to about:config via Address Bar
  2. Click the button that says, "I'll be careful, I promse!"
  3. At the top of this page, search for general.useragent
  4. Try to reset the following if they exist (If prefs are bold (user set) then you can right-click that pref and choose Reset.):
  • general.useragent.extra.firefox
  • general.useragent.extra.productName - where productName can be the name of some third party software (e.g. microsoftdotnet),
  • general.useragent.locale
  • general.useragent.override
  • general.useragent.security

The other thing was to see if you had any user.js file active to initalize prefs when you start Firefox

You can delete a possible user.js file and numbered prefs-##.js files and delete the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value. You can get to the profile folder below:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory > Show Folder

or

  • Go to about:support and click Show Folder next to Profile Directory.

Are you using the Firefox 24.5.0 ESR version?

You can find the Firefox version and update channel in "Firefox > About Firefox"

If that is the case and you want to switch to the release channel then you can find the full version of the current Firefox 29.0.1 release in all languages and for all Operating Systems here:
