why doesn't the short cut on my home page show the website icon all i get is a blank icon and the title no picture of the website

Add the homepage shortcuts to bookmarks to ensure the icons are retained when history is cleared.

I think that the thumbnails are generated from the disk cache, so make sure that you haven't disabled the browsing cache.
