The latest Thunderbird works fine - until I open the Preferences tab, when it hangs, hogs a processor core, and allocates all available memory until crashing. Other tabs (calendar, add-ons, messages, release notes) all work OK.

Does it hang in safe/troubleshoot mode (hold Shift when launching TB)?

Do you have any language packs? They are known to cause issues like this.

It worked OK in safe mode, and I had the English (GB) language pack installed, so I removed the pack and after restarting the program the prefs. tab now works properly in standard mode. Thank you for the suggestion, much appreciated!

I have same problem, removed the Englich (GB) language pack, started in safe mode (i.e. trubleshooting mode) and was able to load the properties to get rid of PDFs opening in Thunderberg. Went back to normal mode and working extreamly slowly then crashes.

Solved mine by using the safe mode as suggested to gain access to the Preferances folder which opened OK, changed my PDF opening to an outside editor. Then found must close the Preferances tab while in the Safe (i.e. trubleshooting ) before restarting. If the Preferances is open in any fashion in normal mode Thunderbird will crash.

If the crash reporter is used to restrat will again crash as the Preferances will still be open.
