Is Firefox upgrade 4.01 an improvement or does it make 4.0 even worse?

I.e. should I venture to load it?

Well, according to [the 4.0.1 release notes] it fixes 55 bugs, mainly security and stability related. I would say that's worth trying. I'm running it as I type, and I used it all day long at work without incident.

Where did you find that release notes link? It used to be so easy to find, but now the "congrats on your update" page just has promo videos for FF (which I'm already using....seems unnecessary).

UGH!!! every time I want to ask my own question, it goes into an endless loop of ask here, you can ask new or search, so 'ask new'.. .then it takes me back to questions that are NOT relevant.

Anyway, this is the only way I can post.

4.0 worked perfect. 4.01 NOT! I'm having all sorts of issues, from being slow, to having to accept every single page and worse, sometimes frames... I can't view videos on FBook. I tweaked it to view pix b/c I couldn't do that either (and it depended on what page of FB I was on, so I had to do this like three times) It even shows banks as not trusted.

Also sync fails all the time. I finally 'removed' it to start anew, and now it gives me 'unexpected error' as soon as I put in my email address to get a new 'sync'.

oh and add-ons aren't loading when you go to add-ons manager to 'get add-ons', this does not load!

I want my 4.0 BACK! how can i remove the latest update 4.01? Anyone know?

I use Facebook a lot and the new version slowed down my computer considerably. I had loading issues. So I uninstalled the new version and went back to the 3.6 version and it's working a lot better.

Why do programers always try to 'improve' things that are already working fine? If it ain't broke don't fix it - or if you have part of it broke just fix that bit. I hate the new version and have wasted hours trying to get stuff back. Think I'll take a leave out of kitha's book and just reload 3.6. Microsoft do this all the time and the learning curve is just a pain especially when most people are really short of time already.

Can you tell me how to find 3.6 and how to reinstall it without losing all the settings data? I've looked on the Mozilla site but cannot find it, and we've been warned about reverting and losing the data.

Go to www.filehippo.com. They have a list of all the previous versions of Firefox.

http://filehippo.com/download_firefox/

Save your bookmarks. Uninstall your current Firefox. Install the version of Firefox you choose from filehippo. Turn off the automatic updates in the Tools-Options-Update

Or, if you want to stay with 4.01, try changing the about:config settings.

Here's a summary of most of the config settings:

Here's a useful Youtube tutorial on how to change some of the settings:

and another website that describes some useful tricks:

Geeky stuff, but my Firefox 4.01 did speed up. Turning on the pipelining feature in about:config makes a big difference.

I have Firefox for years without a problem, but since upgrading to Firefox 4.0.1 when it came out, I have been having all kinds of freeze ups, crashes, computer running slow and a host of other issues. Finally, after my last major crash, I tried to uninstall and reinstall it, but it won't open or if it does open it won't work at all. No way to remove old profiles since it won't even open. It is essentially worthless and there is no reasonable tech support to get help with this issue. This morning I tried one last time to install it and get it to work, but it opens in a small pop-up window that is blank with just audio telling me how great it is, when it doesn't work at all. I guess I am switching to Google Chrome since Firefox doesn't appear to care that it is losing a loyal customer by not providing any type of solution. I may try to install 4.0, but quite frankly, I'm sick of messing with it without any kind of support.

It seems to be taboo to roundly criticize software here - we should be unemotional and factual and productive. I'm ready to violate that rule: Firefox 4.x is an unmitigated disaster. I've always been surprised that open software works at all, let alone so well, but this release signals either the demise of the open software movement or that whomever released this disaster was out to sabotage the process. Is no one in charge who might throw it out and tell us how to get on with things and stop dealing with the problems? How to get back to 3.6? Where to get Firefox 5, which is just like 3 and makes you forget that V.4 ever existed? Will no one explain, or take responsibility for, this cockup?
