I finally switched from XP to W7, I even installed the same FF version for easier switch, I tried replacing the profile folder - didn't work at all. Ireplaced the files in the default folder - didn't work, I finally created a new profile and copied old files there, that restored my bookmarks. Bookmarks only. I also noticed that FF on W7 has more files inside the profile folder (like multiple x.cache folders, frequencycap.json etc.), also the profile folder is doubled in the user->AppData->Roaming->Mozilla.

Back to the main question - is it possible? Some of theaddons were really handy and they seem to be unavailable now like 'tabs on bottom' or 'old button layout'. ALL of them are gone, all Greasemonkey scripts, all adblock rules etc. Same applies to "new tab" setup - gone. About:config setup - gone. And stock Firefox is awful. Thanks any tips.

You are using a VERY old version of Firefox. Please install Firefox 68, which is the most current version. Then, go to addons.mozilla.org and install your extensions

Windows doesn't allow duplicate file or folder names in the same folder. Set Windows to show all file extensions to better be able to distinguish the Profiles folder from the Profiles.ini file. See: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-show-file-extensions-in-windows/

@Tyler Downer That wasn't helpful, I purposely installed the same version as I had on the old system to make the transition as smooth as possible. Addons Iliked the mosed are long gone from the addons page.

@jscher2000 Not in the same folder. In theory the main profile folder should be in user->AppData->Local->Mozilla and so on. And it's there. Thing is - there's another one in a different location, the one Imentioned in my first post.

Where did you hear this theory??

The folder under Roaming has the important data like bookmarks.

The folder under Local has temporary stuff like cache you can trash at any time with little consequence. Definitely not the main folder.

Do not get confused with XP:

  • primary (root/main):
    C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
  • secondary (local/caches):
    *C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

Current Windows versions:

  • root:
    C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
  • local:
    C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

Firefox uses two locations for the Firefox profile folder, so make sure to look in the correct location. Location used for the main profile that keeps your personal data (Root Directory on about:preferences).

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

Location used for the disk cache and other temporary files (Local Directory on about:preferences).

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

Main profile location on XP:

  • C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

I'm pretty sure when I tried %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ command I got transfered to the Local folder. I also noticed that even though I'm on the same firefox version, profile folder has much more folders and files than before. Weird.

Either way. So I tried restoring my old profile in the correct profile folder, still no success, I'm welcomed by blank Firefox.

I'm on the same FF version as before, I have the old profile folder, how do I restore it so it works? Thanks.

Does it contain a places.sqlite file (bookmarks + history) and bookmarkbackups and sessionstore-backups folders?

What files and folders did you copy to the Firefox profile folder?

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

Yes. But both are empty... Oh well, I already started to configure my browser from scratch, I guess it should do.
