If I have a number of tabs open I have to go to the Outlook tab to see if I have new emails whereas before it used to show in the tab. I have cleared the cache and cookies as advised in other questions but still not resolved. The same thing happens with Facebook - it used to show new notifications but now doesn´t.

This is not a Firefox issue. It's the way outlook.com works.

You'll get the same result in Google Chrome or Internet Explorer.
