Why is Firefox updating without permission?

I had Firefox 13 installed and I have the update option set to "Check for updates, but let me choose". According to the Firefox documentation this is supposed to let ME choose WHEN and IF the update is installed.

I've been pestered with popups to install Firefox 14 for the last week or so but I always ignored them. Today I opened Firefox and what do I see? The damn thing installed version 14 without my permission! I'm 100% certain I never told it to install, and checking the update history I see version 14 listed as a "security update", so I imagine it was installed because of that. This is completely and utterly unacceptable.

Can anyone explain this? I now have to live with the useless CRAP introduced in 14 (honestly -- who wasted their time on these horrible new toolbar icons? Oh yeah, they're harder to see and serve no purpose -- fits in great with the new Firefox philosophy), not to mention the new BUGS.

Is it any wonder people are leaving in droves for Chrome?

removed blog link that had really bad advice suggesting to downgrade six version back to a old/insecure version.--

yes this person who removed the blog obviously did not read the entire blog. because FF12 is no where to be found on the net the newest older version that could be found was FF9. But after you install FF9 then you hit upgrade, it will upgrade your FF to FF12 then you stop. Do not upgrade further. so your not installing and running FF9 your only installing FF9 so you can upgrade back to FF12.

chilled1 is shill for firefox dont listen to this idiot. i've been seeing different usernames repeating the same talking point to get you to "upgrade" when the new versions are really DOWNGRADES from the previous. the only thing that gets upgraded is firefox's wallet. firefox used to listen to the people before they got greedy like most, avoid it if you can, if not get the version before this continuous upgrade crap.

Yes, thanks johns7171. If some one read the whole blog they would have seen to use FF9 to upgrade back to FF12.

I think FF deleted their older versions so no one could go back to like FF12 or FF11. Usually on cnet you can download older versions, but they were scrubbed from cnet. Was surprised, and looked all over for hours, couldn't find FF11 or F12, had to go back to find a FF9 version.

Usually you see this when they want you to only use their new version. Just because its new doesn't mean it works 100% right, a lot of times they have bugs to work out. We all seen it, countless programs updated or new versions with bugs. Why do you think Microsoft comes out with all those updates, and you always see service pack 2. Thats when you update! A lot of times that is when the bugs are worked out.
