Link hijack malware on Non-SSL website
when I click on link to navigate a non-ssl (http) website, random popups keep coming up which takes me to some pdf downloader or video converter websites. If I click the same link again, it takes me to the proper page. This happens randomly.

Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web Link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for a good ad blocker.

the issue not about a popup blocker. There seems to be a malware in the browser somewhere. When I click on link on many such non-SSL websites, the same link is opening.

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.
