firefox not opening

When I try to open Mozilla firefox it gives me a "Close Firefox" window saying: "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system."

This message is displayed even though there are no other firefox windows open and even after restarting the system.

I have also tried uninstalling and then reinstalling firefox from the internet but it still gives the same error.

I have a lot of bookmarks which have been saved in firefox and I donot wish to lose them.

Hence please help me use firefox as I do not like any other browser.

Which (Firefox) files did you remove and from which location ?

"Firefox is already running, but is not responding" I have to restart my computer several times a day in order to keep working. If this does not get resolved soon I will have to change to Internet Explorer...and I would prefer not to...Please help! Thanks
