How do I set up a microsoft account so I can send mail and read sent messages

David Huckaby

I have three computers. I use Thunderbird on all three, but on only one, which I will refer to as 1, do I have access to my email account that comes through a Microsoft server (I have two other accounts and have no problems with them). I use Owl on 1 and used its predecessor for many years. I have recently tried to set up that same account on the other two computers. After setting it up via the Thunderbird method, it gets new mail and I can view all the old messages on the server. It does not, however, access any sent messages nor can I send message through it. I have set the outgoing server to the same settings on 1 to no avail. Computer 1 is on a university campus, which is where that account originates, but the other two are in my house. I have to sign in when starting computer 1 but not the other two. Computer 1 is running Windows 10; the other two, 11. I just upgraded both the home computers to Thunderbird 158. What am I doing wrong? Do I need Owl?

One email client for one computer should be enough.

If Thunderbird works, you can install and set it up for all your computers.

You completely misunderstood my comments, which is my fault. Thunderbird does not work on two of my machines for my email account that uses the Microsoft server, no matter how I tried to set it up. Every time, although I could access new messages, I could not access sent messages nor send new ones. Clearly, the problem is in the outgoing server. I also asked if I need Owl to do this, which works on the machine on which that account also works. I have two other email accounts, one of which is the gmail account to which your reply was sent, and both work fine on all three of my computers.

Sorry for my misunderstanding.

Have you compared the Thunderbird settings for your MS account in those computers?

Since you have one working account, if the setting are the same, I think it should work on the other 2 computers as well. You can open the receiving serve settings on your working account and compare.

That is one of many things I tried, none of which worked. One difference is the "work" computer on campus where I have been using Thunderbird for decades requires a password just to start up. Then the same password is required plus second factor authentication to boot up Thunderbird. None of the set ups for Thunderbird on either of my other two computers has required any of this.

I also use Owl on my campus machine. Does the new version of Thunderbird require it?

I have three email addresses. Does it matter which one is the default?

I don't think Thunderbird will require Owl. The default email address should not affect connection.

MS accounts often need 2-factor authentication, so your working account is ok. I assume this is a connection issue. Is there a network proxy for the other two computers? Maybe you can also try to start Thunderbird from troubleshooting mode.
