Every time I receive a Junk email Thunderbird freezes. Why is this happening

First off I am not very computer savvy so please bear with me. Every time I receive a spam email that is supposed to go into my Junk email it pops up in my inbox for a second then Thunderbird freezes for about 20 seconds and sends the email to the Junk folder. I have turned off AVG email protection, have it running in SafeMode and still no change. Any help is much appreciated.
