Can unlocked Firefox OS smartphones be used on Verizon Wireless?

Hi. I've heard ZTE is selling its newest Firefox OS smartphone on eBay unlocked for $99. I was wondering if this smartphone can be used on Verizon Wireless in the United States. I noticed in the eBay listing for the ZTE smartphone that it currently only supports 3G speeds and does not support 4G LTE. Verizon Wireless is a CDMA carrier for 3G network (rather than GSM), so I'm thinking the ZTE Firefox OS smartphone, and probably all other Firefox OS smartphones currently available, are not compatible with Verizon Wireless, even if they are unlocked. Any clarification about my question would be appreciated.

Hi,

Sorry for the wait.

No, Firefox OS devices are currently GSM meaning CDMA carriers such as Sprint and Verizon won't be compatible for two reasons:

  • Different bands
  • GSM uses SIM cards, CDMA uses a certain kind of SIM like Verizon does with its LTE phones.

If you unlock them, there is a very slight chance you can get them ported over to Cricket, Straight Talk, MetroPCS or something similar but as of right now (to my knowledge), Firefox OS devices are strictly CDMA.

Sorry 'bout that. Hope this clarified things for you.
