After updating Firefox I can no longer narrow the window to the width to the size I prefer, and the cookies option no longer gives me the choice to always ask!

Hi Sportster, could you describe this problem in more detail:

After updating Firefox I can no longer narrow the window to the width to the size I prefer

Can you resize the window at all? What happens that prevents you from getting it as narrow as you want -- do you mean instead of the content wrapping you get a horizontal scroll bar in the page, or ???

Regarding cookies, you are correct that Firefox no longer has that feature. As an alternate approach to managing cookies, here's what I suggest:

(1) On the Options page, Privacy panel, set the default cookie lifetime to session-only:

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options

In the left column, click Privacy. On the right, make sure the selector is set to "Firefox will: Use custom settings for history"

Then under cookies set: "Keep until: I close Firefox"

(2) Install an extension that makes it easy to make site-specific changes, such as Cookie Monster.

The Cookie Monster button on the toolbar allows you to see permissions for first party and third party cookies and to change them.

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/cookie-monster/

Sample screen shot attached -- the option to "Apply cookie settings to both HTTP and HTTPS" is turned on, which streamlines the menu. With this option you don't have to set/modify permissions for both HTTP or HTTPS on the same site.

For sites that you want to allow to remember you from session to session, you can change the permission to Accept. This might not take effect until you either start a new session or clear the current session-only cookies.

For sites you don't even want to remember you from page to page, you can change the permission to Block. This might not take effect until you either start a new session or clear the current session-only cookies.

Several other users mentioned they would like this feature added back. You can request/suggest feature changes in future versions of Firefox using this page:

In another thread, I suggested to the posters that they trying social pressure from like-minded users with a petition. For example, on this site: https://www.change.org/

Thanks for the reply,

Yes I can resize the the window, I can make it wider and I can make it taller and extremely shorter but I can't make it as narrow as I used to be able to!

Just a note here... I'm expressing my interest in returning the always ask feature.

I thank you in advance for your cooperation with these matters,

Sportster

How narrow did you want to make the window?

On my system, the window won't go narrower than 393 pixels. This value varies based your Windows "text size" percentage; mine is 125%. If I set Firefox to use smaller fonts as a test (they are a little too small at that size), I can get it down to 318px wide.

Firefox's internal style sheet sets a 300px minimum width (meaning the width inside the borders):

#main-window:not([chromehidden~="toolbar"]) {
  min-width: 300px;
}

If I override that rule, the tab bar becomes kind of useless, but I assume you don't care about tabs in the narrow window. Or maybe you use an add-on that modifies tabs to work in such a narrow window...

Thanks again for the reply,

I don't know how to specify the width by pixel, but about another 15%.

And you are correct, I don't care about the tabs and the window content size is fine.

Isn't there a setting in "about:config" to address this

I thank you again,

Sportster

There's a setting in about:config to increase or decrease the size of text and images (global zoom level). But if you like the size they are now, then you need to consider Plan B, which would be to apply custom style rules to Firefox.

When I simply override the minimum width I mentioned before, the tab bar becomes useless, as shown in the attached screenshot. So it's going to take a more sophisticated set of rules to do it justice.

One place to request assistance with custom style rules is this forum: https://forum.userstyles.org/categories/style-requests -- the site also hosts pre-written custom style rules.
