One of my folders disappeared.
I am literally sick. Several months ago all of the emails in my purchases folder disappeared. I was able to restore some from backup, but several months of receipts and vendor information were simply lost with no apparent reason. I did the rebuild folders process to no avail.
Today, the folder with all of my rental house information including several sub-folders is gone! This is very destructive and damaging. I have used Thunderbird for years, but now I have lost all trust in the software. Again, I attempted the rebuild folder process, but the folder does not even exist in the profiles ... folder. These are important business folders being affected, not my jokes or news or other non-essencial mails. Can anyone please help me? Am I the victim of some hacker? Is there some explanation?

I still think your original issue and this are related to actions taken by avast. Are you sure there is no anti virus activity in the avast logs. Not necessarily a quarantine. Simply finding a virus or such like?
I have checked everything on Avast and can find no quarantine item or log related to anything in Thunderbird.
What is the missing folders name? anything in the log for that. What your looking for is not going to say Thunderbird. it will be the file with the mail in it, so it will have the name of the missing folder.
However go to the help menu. open the troubleshooting information Click on the show folder button for your profile Close Thunderbird delete the files panacea.dat and foldertree.json in the explorer window that opened. Restart Thunderbird.
