How do you import IE favorites as add-ins to bookmarks drop list but not as a seperate folder in the list.

When importing IE favorites to Firefox bookmarks I would like them to mix & mingle - not come in as an added folder in the drop down bookmark list. With IE you are able to go to Favorites folder in 'C:/documents and settings/user profile/favorites and directly edit. Can't seem to do that with Firefox's 'Profile' file.

Export your IE favorites in HTML format, and then import that file into Firefox.

In IE:
File > Import/Export - Export to HTML file

then in Firefox:
Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks -> Import & Backup - Import HTML... = From HTML file

You can move the imported IE Favorites out of the "From Internet Explorer" folder where they appear after importing them in Firefox.

Thank you for your reply but that was the method I was trying to avoid due to the fact of the lengthly work it would entail.

When I installed Firefox I allowed it to import IE favorites. Since then I have been using both programs to net with to see which one I prefer and have saved web sites to both. By HTML import method, would I wind up with duplicates that I would neeed to delete? If so I suppose that would be a time consuming method that I was trying to avoid. I don't understand why Mozilla didn't make the links into a folder like IE has.

To answer your last question first, yes you would have duplicates of every bookmarks that was originally imported from IE. But that is easy to fix if you haven't started moving bookmarks out of that "from Internet Explorer" folder. Just delete that entire folder, by a right-click and selecting Delete - either from the Bookmarks drop-down or in the Bookmarks Sidebar view.

Sorry, you didn't mention that they were already imported in your first posting. As you have found out, when IE Favorites are imported using the Import Wizard (during the installation procedure or from using File > Import), they end up in a separate folder named something like from Internet Explorer. I don't understand the reasoning for doing it that way, but it's been that way always, as I recall.

When you import a bookmarks.html file using the Organize Bookmarks / Library window, those bookmarks are appended to the existing Firefox bookmarks in basically the same folder setup as they were in the other browser, they are placed below any existing Firefox bookmarks. They aren't placed in their own folder labeled "from Internet Explorer" as done when using the "Import Wizard".

As far as the " Links " folder from IE, that is basically the equivalent of the Firefox Bookmarks Toolbar (BTB) folder. No type of bookmarks "import" makes the Links bar items or a BTB folder (from another Firefox installation, for instance) that was imported - the Bookmarks Toolbar folder that is used.

I can't recall how to "fix" that, I have been using the same customizing tricks for so long (only one folder on the BTB, but that folder contains a series of folder and over 150 bookmarklets and bookmarks) that when I import into a new Profile, all I need to "rearrange" is that one folder by moving it into the Bookmarks Toolbar folder. That's a lot easier than moving a dozen or more individual bookmarks around. Basically, that one folder works similar to the Links bar in IE, when only the Links word is showing on a toolbar; click it and drop-down appears. I put that folder right next to the Location bar and hide the empty Bookmarks Toolbar - one less toolbar taking up room at the top of Firefox.

I always open all browsers at the same time if I need to move or copy bookmarks from one profile to another profile. Then I can use the clipboard Copy in one profile and Paste the bookmarks to that other profile.

You can select (Shift + cursor Down or Shift click cq Ctrl click) all imported IE bookmarks and move (e.g. via Cut & Paste) them out of the "From Internet Explorer" folder to their own folder or move one folder at a time if you need different locations.

If you need to check for duplicates the look at:

Thanks a bunch. It worked just like you stated.

I'll give your answers added weight in any future problems that I may have.

Thanks Craig
