Firefox is unable to "update" when an automatic message arrives. I've uninstalled & reinstalled Mozilla. Still, no ability to update.

From time to time I receive a message that an automatic update to Firefox is available . When I click OK, it starts to update but is unsuccessful in doing do. Then, I ge another message telling me so.

I have uninstalled and re-installed several times. I am still unable to receive automatic updates.

I have Vista (it sucks). Is that the reason why? What to do?

Run the Firefox program once as Administrator (right-click: Run as Administrator).

See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Software_Update (Software Update not working properly)
Remove the files in the updates and updates\0 folder:

C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates
(%LOCALAPPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates)

Do a clean (re)install:

  • Download a fresh Firefox copy from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html and save the file to the desktop.
  • Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
  • Don't remove personal data when uninstalling.
  • It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.

Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere (not in the Firefox program folder) and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

Other things that need attention:

Your above posted system details show outdated plugin(s) with known security and stability risks that you should update.

  1. Shockwave Flash 10.0 r45
  2. Java Plug-in 1.6.0 for Netscape Navigator (DLL Helper)

Update the Flash plugin to the latest version.

Update the Java plugin to the latest version.
