Unable to deselect "Ask to save logins and passwords for websites"
I am unable to de-select the "Ask to save logins and passwords for websites" setting. The option is checked and I cannot "uncheck" the box. The texted is grey and the check box is a light color denoting it's not able to be toggled.
I searched for a solution and it's not the same problem as others are having where they have the the "never remember history" option enabled. My setting is "remember history."
I am a personal user, and this is my personal computer. I have admin rights on my computer. Running Windows 10 Pro.

You can set signon.rememberSignons to false to disable the Firefox Password Manager, that should remove the checkmark on "Ask to save Logins and Passwords for websites".

It is possible that a policy has been created by security software. Enter about:policies in the address bar to see whether there is one.

Thank you for the response Terry. When I try about:policies it see that there are no policies active. I do not have any security software other than the built in Windows antivirus & firewall. I do have a third party password manager (1Password), which is why I would like to disable Firefox from offering to save any logins and passwords.
Does signon.rememberSignons have a lock on the about:config page indicating this setting is locked ?
You can check what .js files are present in the "defaults\pref" folder in the Firefox program folder. The channel-prefs.js file that sets app.update.channel is a legitimate file in this folder, any other .js file is suspicious. You can open this suspect file in a plain text editor like Notepad (Mac: TextEdit) and please post its content to see whether that allows to identify what software created the file. Also please post the content of the autoconfig.cfg file referenced in this autoconfig.js file.
There shouldn't be a autoconfig.cfg file present unless you've created it yourself to initialize some prefs.
If you have this autoconfig.cfg file then best is to do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder to make sure that all files are removed before reinstalling a freshly downloaded copy of Firefox.

signon.rememberSignons is set to true and I can toggle to false if desired. There are 4 options I can toggle (screenshot attached). If I toggle one or some of these to off will that effectively be the same as unchecking the "Ask to save logins and passwords for websites" setting?
The only file present in the defaults\pref folder is channel-prefs.js - I can look at this file in notepad and it looks normal. There are no other files to inspect.
Your first screenshot doesn't show if there is a possible message that an extension is controlling the password manager. This message would appear just above the "Ask to save Logins and Passwords for websites" line.

Start Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or if userChrome.css/userContent.css is causing the problem.
- switch to the Default System theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
- do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Troubleshoot Mode start window
Cor-el, Thank you for the reply. I tried troubleshoot mode and I have the default theme applied and the setting is still not able to be unchecked.
I have two extensions installed, 1password - my password manager, and windscribe - a vpn extension. If one of those extensions were causing the setting to be unavailable, would going into troubleshoot mode have fixed that?
I attached two screenshots, is that was you were referring to?
As I suspected, you can see in the new screenshot that another Password Manager (1Password) is controlling the logins and this means that the Firefox password manager is disabled.
Did you miss or didn't understand this notification and possibly click the 'i' icon for more information ?
This causes "Ask to save Logins and Passwords for websites" to be grayed/disabled and this means that the Firefox password manager is disabled. The grayed checkboxes you see merely show the current state that will be restored once 1Password is removed/disabled and Firefox can take control again, so nothing to worry about not being able to make changes.
Unfortunately the Firefox password manager not dosabled. I know this because Firefox continues to ask me to save passwords on every site I visit, and it will often overlay 1Password. This is why I'm trying to disable it.
