Once again, an entire subfolder has vanished after Thunderbird performed a compacting procedure.

The last time this happened, I was instructed to right-click the main folder, select "Properties'" and click on "Repair."

This I just did, but the disappeared folder did not reappear. I can search for individual e-mails which I know to have been in the folder, and they do show up in my search, but the containing folder is nowhere to be found.

I have not performed a backup of Thunderbird's profile files, but I imagine the current profile would still have this folder? How to I reinstate it?

Truthfully, it is pretty annoying when performing a routine compacting of a folder results in a subfolder doing a vanishing act. This is at least the third time this has happened to me. Ought I to avoid letting Thunderbird compact altogether?

Any assistance in getting back my missing folder will be greatly appreciated.

I am hoping some kind soul will respond to my query soon. Every day Thunderbird keeps asking if I want to compact now, and I keep hitting "cancel" because I am fearful that letting it do so will result in yet another subfolder disappearing.

And I still need to find out if there is a means to restoring the missing subfolder, given that the e-mails formerly contained in that folder do show up when I conduct a search for them.

Thanks in advance for any assistance on this problem.

Compact you should. You can make it less regular by changing options, but it is an absolutely essential function. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/compacting-folders

You might want to read the potential complications in the article as the installed anti virus is by far the most common issue.

But I must wonder what version you are using as you post from Firefox 52 on a windows 7 device adding that the term compact has not been used in recent version, with purge replacing it in dialogs. Perhaps to reduce a recurrence of fixed bugs you might want to use a current version of the application like the current V91.
