The Lightning add-on won't allow me to create new tasks or events. Why?

I just changed computers and when I re-installed Thunderbird, I had to re-add the Lightning plug-in. When I tried to add an event, it would not allow me to do so; the "New Event" item in the menu was greyed out. I'm having the same problem adding new tasks. I do not use Google Calendar; I just want to use Lightning to keep track of events like I used to on my old computer. Can you help?

Just to let you know that the current release for Thunderbird is version 52.7.0

Lightning now comes installed automatically with Thunderbird, although it is still an addon extension.

Have you installed the correct version of Lightning Addon extension ? What version of Thunderbird are you using? What version of 'Lightning' are you using?

You say you have installed Lightning, so it will show up in : 'Menu icon' > 'Add-ons' > 'Extensions' list If Lightning has a button called 'Enable' then it is not enabled. If Lightning has a button called 'Disable' then it is enabled. Have you enabled it ? Did you restart Thunderbird after enabling it?

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

I am running Thunderbird 17.0.8 on a Windows 10 Home machine. Lightning is version 1.9.1, which is the version that installed when I searched Lightning in my add-ons. I've clicked the Update Add-ons button and it says my add-ons are all up to date. Lightning is enabled (it has a "disable" button in the add-on screen). And I have restarted both Thunderbird and the computer multiple times, with no change in the problem.

I think that answers all your questions. I hope you can help me with a simple solution.

Thanks, Kevin.

re : Thunderbird version 17.0.8

Lightning version 1.9.1. should be the correct version.

Is there a reason for using a Thunderbird version which is several years out of date? The reason I ask is that TB version 17.0.8 was created prior to Windows 10 and therefore was never tested to check it worked ok on that OS. Although that may not be the problem.

check to see if the Calendar is read only.

Select Calendar Is there a padlock icon next to the calendar right click on the 'home' calendar in left Pane and select 'Properties' uncheck 'Read only' click on 'OK' select Home calendar checkbox.

Retry to create Event.

The calendar has no padlock next to it, so I assume it is not read only. Maybe I need to update to the latest version? Though that seems strange because I've got it set on auto update (and have checked manually a few times) and it always tells me I'm up to date. But you say this version came out before Windows 10. That's odd...

Okay I ran a manual update. Now I'm on version 38.5.0 and Lightning seems to work fine. Thanks for your help.
