why when I try to add new mail a/c why dpoes this pop up? "Would you like a new email address?"
Nothing on the new panel works, and does not allopw me to go further? It locks up

If you are trying to add an existing mail account, then it is not new, it is an existing mail account.
Try using the correct menu entry.
No,I was indeed trying to set up a new account. However Thunderbird continually put up an invitation to set up an email account with them, and would then lock up so that not one of the three available buttons would achieve anything. The only way in which I found to solve this problem was by uninstalling Thunderbird and reinstalling an earlier version of the program.
This appears to be a current bug.
Have you set up the account yet with an email provider? When you have done so, it is an "existing" email address as far as Thunderbird is concerned.
The "new" account feature deliberately takes you to a vendor who will sell you one.
Yes. I merely had to reset the details my long term provider needed - which I could do, when I got rid of the interference from the version (45.nn) from Thunderbird. All running now!
