All my email folders have been blank for some time now,

Please explain in more detail what that means. What folders? No messages at all? Messages, but no contents? Account type - POP or IMAP?

All folders are empty, including trash, sent, etc. I connect to my email provider, sasktel, but nothing shows. I can only see the contents in a browser. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling. I checked the settings as far as server ports. I closed the firewall an AVG. It is a POP type account.

As you have all your folders appearing as empty and they have been like this for some time, then I'm wondering if a couple of things are going on.

It is possible there is another pop mail account folder in your profile folders and it is empty of emails. Thunderbird may be looking in the wrong location for the folders, and possibly creating default folders. So check this out.

Please check out the following and report back all info.

First...make hidden files and folders visible:

In Thunderbird:

  • Right click on mail account name in Folder Pane and select 'Settings'
  • Select 'Server Settings' for the pop mail account

Bottom right, you will see 'Local directory'

  • Copy that line - make sure you get all of it as some will be hidden off to the right.
  • Paste the info in this forum question.
  • then click on OK to close the Account Settings window.
  • Help > TRoubleshooting Information
  • click on 'Show folder' button

a new window opens showing the contents of your profile name folder.

  • click on 'Mail' folder

You will see a list of pop mail accounts and 'Local Folders' mail account. What do you see? Is there more than one pop mail account, maybe it has a number after it?

  • Post image of the 'Mail' folder window showing all the pop mail account names.

If there is more than one pop mail account:

  • click on popmail account name

You will see a list of files that have same name as the folders in the Folder pane.

  • Enable the size column.
  • If it shows files with no extension with a size (not *.msf files), then open the Inbox (no extension) file using Notepad.

Do you see emails written one after the other? The oldest will be at the top. If yes, then make a note of the pop mail account name which has those emails and tell us in the forum which one has the emails.

senario example: If you see:

It is possible that all the emails are in the first one, but your thunderbird is looking at the second one.

If you see something like this then you need to go back into Account Settings and point Thunderbird to correct pop mail account. In Thunderbird:

  • Right click on mail account name in Folder Pane and select 'Settings'
  • Select 'Server Settings' for the pop mail account
  • Bottom right, you will see 'Local directory' ......click on 'Browse'
  • locate the correct pop mail account

It is likely to be in this location C:\Users\User Account name\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\profile name\Mail\pop mail account name

  • then click on OK
  • Restart Thunderbird.

Do you see old emails in the folders?

Do new emails get downloaded?

If no, do you get any error message? If yes, what error message...word for word.

Check out the Firewall: If this occurred after an update, it is possible your Firewall is blocking Thunderbird. The Firewall could be part of your anti-virus package or if not using AVG because you uninstalled it, then it is likely the default Firewall is now working and blocking Thunderbird., so whatever product you are using the Firewall must be reset to allow Thunderbird.
