My local folders, where I save read messages have disappeared

I opened Thunderbird today and the local folder view has changed. Whereas I used to have a list of friends *& businesses where I saved read messages, there is just the deleted folder and an outbox folder. All my saved messages seem to be lost - what's the idea???
