Last evening everything was fine. This morning I wake up and find that Thunderbird will not accept my e-mail password. It gives an error meassage as follows:

Sending of password for user myname@hotmail.co.uk did not succeed. Mail server pop3.live.com responded: Authentication failure: unknown user name or bad password. [Error="ProxyNotAuthenticated" AuthResult=0 Proxy=DB6PR0801MB1416.eurprd08.prod.outlook.com:1995:SSL]

I have checked the password by using it in the Hotmail screens and it works fine.

I can still see the e-mails that were downloaded previously and I can open them etc, but can't download any new ones

I am also able to Write a new e-mail, and send it to myself - the same password is accepted to Send the e-mail, but then it will not accept that password to download the incoming mail.

Please what happened and how can I fix it.

just check if your thunderbird is not offline check too if u have enough free space on ya drive too

Go to the Hotmail site and turn pop back on. Microsoft probably turned it off .

Shey Louis Chia:

Thank you, but I've got 240GB spare empty space on that drive, and Thunderbird is not offline (I didn't know it could go offline!)!

Airmail:

Thank you, pardon my slowness, but how to turn pop back on, please, I've never changed it from how I set it years ago when I first set up Thunderbird

This is a Microsoft problem. They are converting all their free email accounts and every Hotmail user with this error has discovered that POP has been turned off in their account. This is something that you fix by logging into your account with a Web browser at the Hotmail page. You need to ask Hotmail for help if you cannot find it yourself.

Aiemail:

Thanks for second reply. I will give Hotmail a go - but first to the gym to clear the cobwebs out of my head before i try anything else. Thanks for your help.

Airmail: thank you again - I figured it out ands now all is well again! Thank you again
