"Mail Account Setting " won't accept my (correct) password for yahoo.com, but it does accept my password for sbcglobal.net.

What mail account setting? What error message to you see?

We often see people complaining about passwords when their anti virus completely sabotages the account setup process. Is that what you are doing? Disable email scanning in your anti virus and try again.

1. "Mail Account Setting" is a Thunderbird screen. File > New > Get a New Mail Account .> [click "Skip this . . ."]. 2. "Configuration could not be verified -- is the username or password wrong?" 3. Don't have "email scanning in my anti virus" that I know of.

As Thunderbird knows what the correct setting for Yahoo are, WE are looking at only a couple of posabilities.

1. You are selecting to use POP and have not enabled it on the Yahoo web site. 2. Your firewall is blocking Thunderbid. This is unlikely as it has retrieved your setting 3. You have an anti virus program that scans mail and it is messing up the process.

Your pick really.

1. POP is indeed enabled in Yahoo, although I see that Thunderbird uses POP3, whereas Yahoo uses just plain POP. Any difference? 3. Turns out I do have an anti-virus program that scans e-mail, AVG. I have disabled it, but without effect. 4. Having pretty well given up on POP I set Yahoo to forward instead, but it doesn't do that either. I know you are not a Yahoo specialist, but can you help further?

the 3 is the revision of the pop protocol. Yahoo support it. I use it myself.

AVG unfortunately is not as truthful about it's status as it should be. and we have this not on it https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues#AVG

I think you will probably do well with IMAP for your yahoo mail. Just remember the server and Thunderbird will be exactly the same. so delete on one reflects on the other.

IIRC AVG has a firewall component. <<Googleing>>

Yep here are some instruction to struggle with it. http://fixmyavg.blogspot.com.au/2011/11/what-to-do-when-avg-firewall-is.html

To be clear, AVG will not scan your mail on Yahoo unless you jump through the hoops in the link. It's firewall, like all of the ones in anti virus products is a pig, doing random things without any real rhyme or reason. Blocking access is one of it's strong points if my few minutes on Google were anything to go by.

Given your apparent lack of knowledge about you computer security. I strongly suggest you update to a supported operating system. XP is not an internet facing operating system anymore. Especially unless you are some sort of expert. While XP may still be powering cash registers and ATM's it is also locked down by experts. And still they have problems. (Target in the US). I still have a GPS unit powered by windows 98. So I am the pot calling the kettle black. But that unit never gets onto a network connected to the internet. Manly because I think it would be compromised in minutes.

Yahoo.com doesn't offer IMAP, so I left it as POP. I enabled IMAP in T'bird, but original problem persists. Thanks anyway.

The only unaddressed clue is that the automatic forwarding that Yahoo offers alternatively to POP doesn't work either, although manual forwarding of a given message does work.

And, mercifully, the POP connection between T'bird and sbcglobal.net (somwhow related to Yahoo) continues to work (knock on wood).

Yahoo do offer imap... they have done for years. They actually offered it free to US and Canadian residents before they did the same for POP.

Thunderbird will create an account as IMAP as default. You have to change the setting to modify that.

So what are you trying to do with forwarding? send it to your SBC global account?

Yahoo.com may indeed offer IMAP, but not where I have looked for it, along with POP, at (gear symbol) > Settings > Acounts > username@yahoo.com > "Access your Yahoo Mail elsewhere".

Yes, in T'bird the choice between IMAP and POP is clear.

Yes, as a test -- one time only -- of Yahoo.com. I use T'bird only with my accounts at sbcglobal.net, and I just relized that my yahoo.com account contains messages unread for years, so I am trying to route future messages to T'bird, where I might actually see them. Fortunately no one but yahoo.com has that address, so all the old mail is from yahoo.com administrators.

Thank you, but the problem does not appear to be yahoo.com's POP or IMAP server settings, which T'bird finds automatically. Instead, although yahoo.com recognizes its password when entered directy in yahoo.com, it does not do so when entered via T'bird. Another account of mine, with sbcglobal.net, which is apparently run by yahoo.com, works fine.  ??

Did you enable Yahoo 2-step authentication?

I don't know. What is it, and how would I do it?

Thanks. 2-step was and is off. Anyhow, it seems intended only for smartphones, not computers.
