In option /display / formatting /colors choose color and uncheck use system colors
It works on mails that don't use color settings in html.
Sorry, that doesn't seem to solve my problem. It's still the same dull look. I seem to be able to change the color WITHIN the email, but not the overall look when I initially open up email.

You could try an add-on Theme-font-size-changer Or you could search for a theme at Mozilla_add-on themes
