How can I stop Thunderbird from spontandously adding entries to my address book?
It appears that every e-mail address in the headers of every e-mail I receive is added to my address book. Many are duplicates. Thanks.

Thunderbird is designed to collect addresses you send to that aren't already in your address book, and this can be configured under Tools|Options|Composition|Addressing.
But it has not, for a very long time, offered to automatically collect addresses from incoming messages. If you wanted this ability you'd have to find an add-on.
Are you sure it's collecting incoming addresses? What add-ons do you have? Try in Safe Mode to see if it goes away.
