I have been testing various options and I can replicate your situation.

So please try this: Tools > Options > Display > Formatting tab or Menu icon > Options > Options > Display > Formatting tab

click on 'Colours' button Select : 'Allow content to choose it's own colours, instead of my selections above.' click on OK. Click on OK

Open a new Write message and test. Please report back on results.

You select an email. File > Print Preview

Does the Preview display all the various colours in the email ? If yes, click on 'Print', then select 'Properties'. Check your printer is not selected to only print in greyscale, otherwise everything will be black and white - not colour.

You must have misunderstood my problem. Has nothing to do with the printer. When I am in my mail view and I am typing a letter and want to emphasize a phrase by highlighting the print, my color tab does not work. All of the print stays black. The color choices are numerous (color of rainbow) but all I get is black. It has always worked in the past. Please help

Does this also occur when running Thunderbird in Safe Mode?

in Thunderbird Help > Restart with addons disabled.

I have no idea how to run Thunderbird in 'safe mode'. Please tell me how. As a side note I am 81 years old and not too old to learn something new. Thanks for your help.

I have already mentioned how to run Thunderbird in Safe Mode :)

in Thunderbird Left Click on 'Help' and then left click on this option: 'Restart with addons disabled'.

A small window pops up asking if you are sue you want to restart. click on 'Restart' button.

Then another small window will open called 'Thunderbird Safe Mode'. Click on 'Continue in Safe mode' button.

Thunderbird will close and then auto reopen in Safe Mode.

I did just as you said but the problem still exist. I am in safe mode now. I should I get out or does it automatically go off when I turn my computer off?

Thunderbird will auto start normally when restarted.

To help narrow down this issue: In a new Write window: Can you type in one colour and then select another colour and type a few words in that colour or is it not possible to do that either?

in a new 'write' window, nothing works. I have highlighted the words and pressed numerous colors and they all come out black. I know how to do this and have done it numerous times. All of a sudden the color choice stopped working. I've searched the net for a solution and nothing works. Would it help if I download Thunderbird again? I really am greatful for your concern.

I did as you said. I checked it out 3 times and still no color. I even checked the back ground tab which is set on white and it did not work either. Sorry. Marie

I shut down and went back in and what you told me worked. I tried it a few more times and it is working. Praise the Lord and thank you so much. thekicr
