The search bar is fixed just with a magnifi icon and it just says search here and I do not have a drop down menu to choose another search engine. I have the latest version 29.01

This can be caused by an add-on such as the DefaultTab extension, and probably many others.

Could you try disabling ALL nonessential or unrecognized extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable (or if obviously not good, Remove).

Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Does that get rid of the impostor search box?

Note: If there is no Remove button for an extension, typically you need to use the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program, to get rid of it. Clicking the "Installed on" column heading can help you identify bundled items that were not disclosed or which otherwise snuck on board.

You can check if you have the XML files of the default search engines including Google in the browser\searchplugins folder in the Firefox program.

If not then you need to reinstall Firefox.

You can delete the search.json file and possible search-metadata.json and search.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder to reset the search engines to the default.

Firefox will rebuild the search.json file from the default search engines in the "browser\searchplugins" folder in the Firefox program and the searchplugins folder in the Firefox profile folder.

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

Your System Details shows;

Installed Plug-ins

Version 5.4.2.18903 5.1.30214.0

and

Adobe Shockwave for Director Netscape plug-in, version 12.1.1.151 Adobe Shockwave for Director Netscape plug-in, version 12.0.7.148

Download the Mozilla Search Reset {web link} This add-on is very simple: on installation, it backs up and then resets your search preferences and home page to their default values, and then uninstalls itself. This affects the search bar, URL bar searches, and the home page.

Everything is still the same all I see is a magnifying glass icon and no option to change search engine

A program called zensearch took over my search bar and I just deleted it in REVO uninstaller and now all my search engines have come back to me please make a not of this for others. The site that took over my search is www.zensearch,com

Zensearch took over my search bar and stopped all the others and I just deleted it and all my search engines are back. Revo uninstaller did the job.
