what is the purpose of the 'updated' folder?

Re - Windows version of Mozilla Firefox

Secunia PSI sees the firefox.exe file as an end of life installation; even after the firefox.exe file in the main part of the program has been updated. Modifying the "updated" folder does not seem to have any effect on current operation - ergo the question.
