English version of Firefox in China

I am an English speaker working and living in China. I just updated firefox (while on my VPN) for Windows 7 to Firefox 24 English version and I am now somehow running the Chinese version. I have uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times and checked that the .exe is the English version. I have also followed advice from a comment here and reinstalled the English version on top of the Chinese version with and without the VPN. This seems ridiculous that installing the English version would EVER be anything except the English version -- no matter where you are located at the time. I wish I would have never updated and unfortunately might have to convert to Internet Explorer. Please help!

Thanks. However, I can't seem to install the language pack. I tried to open the file in Firefox but I can't navigate through Firefox now as everything is in Chinese. Is there an easy way to install the langauge pack? I believe that this is probably not the issue since I installed the English version, but it is worth a try.

You only need a language pack if you want to have multiple languages installed.
If for some reason Firefox has changed you current locale to Chinese then you should install the English (en-US) version on top of the current Chinese version.

You can find the full version of the latest Firefox 24.0 release in all languages and for all Operating Systems here:

Thanks cor-el. However, it seems you didn't read my original post. I have attempted to both do a clean install of the English version and also instal the English version on top of the Chinese version. Neither approach has worked. So it was suggested that I install the English language pack -- in fact, I do want to use both English and Chinese -- as a possible fix. I went to the link given in the above post by ideato. However, when I download the .xpi language pack file I do not know what program to use to open/install it, and when using Firefox to open it I can't follow the process as Firefox is in Chinese now.

So my two questions are as follows: 1) How to install the language pack? 2) Any other procedures to fix this problem?

You can install a language pack just like you install an extension.

You can open the language pack in Firefox (Firefox > New Tab > Open File) or in the Add-ons manager (about:addons; Tools button > Install Add-on from file) to install additional languages.

Thanks. After a couple of attempts at installing the English versoin on top of the Chinese version, the solution to the problem was to go to about:config and manually change general.useragent.locale to en-US. Although, I am still unsure why this is a necessary step when installing the English version.

The download button at http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/ says "Firefox Free Download English (US)"

But when I downloaded and run it, an Chinese version is installed. I can't say that I enjoy the joke here.

Hello ZaneUJi, try form : http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/

thanks

Hi ideato, thanks for the reply.

It turns out that my ISP redirects anything ends with "Firefox Setup 25.0.1.exe" to http://101.44.1.8/download/27260314/33804495/3/exe/175/113/1384484904367_625/Firefox%20Setup%2025.0.1.exe

No matter which language I choose, I end up with the same URL above. I just downloaded and installed "Firefox Setup 26.0b8.exe". Everything seems fine.

Hi ZaneUJi, ok, but you are in beta channel, 26.0.x

channels

thanks

Did you check the general.useragent.locale pref on the about:config page?

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.

  • Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • (32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.
