How to view files in a backup of the cache?

I am trying to retrieve a phone number from a craigslist post that has since expired. The post is not in about:cache; probably overwritten when I went to that page today and learned it was expired. I back up my PC each night, and have tried restoring the cache from a few days ago, but when I do that and try to view it, most of the entries are quickly moved to a cache.trash folder. How can I view the contents of a backup of the Firefox cache?

You might try creating a new profile, exit Firefox, then restoring your backup places.sqlite (history) file to the main profile folder under \roaming and the cache files to the profile folder under \local. When you start Firefox, set it to Work Offline (classic File menu > Work Offline) then try about:cache.

Firefox will move the cache to a trash folder if it finds the dirty bit in the _CACHE_MAP_ file at offset 0x0f set to 0x01.
