DSL connection lost on homedepot.com

When I connect to homedepot.com, after a minute or so, I lose my DSL connection (red light on modem). This ALWAYS happens on that web site and ONLY on that web site. What the hell? It does not happen with (ugh) internet explorer. I am using Firefox 54.0.1 64-bit on Windows 7, SP1.

I gather this is the rolled up release that includes SP2.

Please consider turning on send info to Mozilla before posting a question. This helps us help you. As I have no info from your system that would help see things that cause issues.

Note that the current release for ESR is 52.4.1 https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/ and the current Firefox release is 56.0.2 https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/

I would think possibly the site does not like your version or it does not include something it is looking for when you connect. So Update.

you can try this. Copy and paste below to a notepad.txt and call it Flush.txt ________________________________ @Echo on pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc attrib -h -s -r hosts echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS attrib +r +h +s hosts popd ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew ipconfig /flushdns netsh winsock reset all netsh int ip reset all shutdown -r -t 1 del %0 ______________________________________________ Once saved as Flush.txt save it again as Flush.bat Then double click and run it. Note it will shut down all programs running and reboot and Flush your Network Card out and then delete itself. Upon return you will have new settings provided by your DSL

Thanks for the speedy response. Unfortunately, it didn't help.

I also removed some entries I had made in the hosts file and disabled extensions in Firefox. I rebooted the computer, the DSL modem and the router.

Please note that Firefox does not crash; I just lose the DSL connection. It takes around a minute of paging around on the site to cause the problem.

I fired up an old XP machine with Firefox 47.0.1. I had the same problem with that machine and homedepot.com - lost the DSL connection.

Note you can update your XP to 52.4.1 here : https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/

No mention of updating to the above that was asked of you.

Nor a reason running 54 instead of 56.0.2

Need to do something about updating as there is no answer for you other than update.

The XP machine is used maybe ten minutes a year. Not really worth the time to upgrade. And we know that a later version on another machine shows the same problem, so that is not a fix.

You say, "there is no answer for you other than update." If you don't know what the problem is, how can you be sure that is the answer?

Okay, I guess we are stuck here.

I was hoping that you might have an idea as to why just that one web site causes the problem. I find it hard to believe I am the only person to have such a problem.

They are not following the W3C.org (World Wide Web Consortium) in charge of standards and practises for browsers and web pages.

These errors can contribute to being disconnected.

And yes no idea. You are the only one.

Try deleting your cache and cookies.

Okay. I am convinced. I will try an update.

I have read that many people running Windows 7 are going to the ESR version. Do you strongly recommend that? If so, is there a way I can do a regular upgrade to ESR or is a fresh install required?

Depends on drivers and age and such. I am from Canada, I build or tell someone this is what I want, Nobody buys from Dell unless old and Leno whatever....no brand name stuff. I buy from NCIX.com (Canada, they do have a USA site but is real small) I have built from my specs every system have owned.

If wanting to really take a risk there are Driver Updaters Iobit Speed something but can break it.

So just about all people on XP are there. People with older Systems running Win 7 are moving there. There is no enhancement features it just gets security updates. Right now your running less than the ESR. The Urls for the ESR version are above in other messages.

To run the SFC command use the Windows key + X keyboard shortcut to open the Power User menu and select Command Prompt (Admin). Type "SFC /SCANNOW" (without quotes or copy/paste) and press Enter. For more information on using SFC, please refer to the Microsoft KB: Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files

Run the Windows Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) and System File Checker (SFC) tools as Administrator. The DISM and SFC tools scan the integrity of the Windows image and all protected system files replaces corrupted, damaged and incorrect versions. (FOR DOING Above & Below - WINDOWS All OTHER VERSIONS - Use Search To Find Command Prompt ** Enter CMD.exe to Find COMMAND PROMPT Then Right Click & RUN AS ADMIN) Type "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" (without quotes or copy/paste) and press Enter.

Note : SFC fixes files locally using files found on your system. Note : DISM goes up to Microsoft for new ones. May or maynot work with DISM as MS provides little support for WIN7 as want people to move to Win10

Did you do the SFC and DISM commands ?

It looks like from this thread that we are troubleshooting the operating system and the issue is with the connection to the website. Originally we were troubleshooting this and it is correct the Firefox does not support Windows XP.

The error described sounds like the connection is timing out. Are there any error messages on the webpage? Please share a screenshot.

I ran SFC and DSIM (with /scanhealth) and got no errors.

There are no errors reported on the web page when the connection fails. There are no notes in the status bar.

I'm not sure what guigs means by "the Firefox does not support Windows XP." I have had Firefox running on that XP machine for about ten years. There is no timeout error shown when the connection fails.

It's only the modem that fails; I can reconnect using the instance of Firefox which I was using when the error occurred.

Let me repeat: Only this one web site causes the failure, And it does it on two computers - one with 32-bit XP and FF 47.0.1, and one with 64-bit Windows 7 and FF 56.0.2 (64 bit).

I don't think I should waste your time on this. It's probably something so weird that it will never be replacable.
