After I do a search of messages the results window opens with a list of messages with the search term. But double clicking on the message title does not open the message. I have to note the date and time of the message and then open it from the appropriate folder.

Why won't messages open?

Where exactly are you when you are searching the messages are you on the forums, in an email app, or somewhere similar? Also, what platform are you using android, Windows, iOS?

It is obvious that you are using Thunderbird, but you said "After I do a search of messages the results window opens with a list of messages with the search term. " Sometimes people do use the computer eg: Windows search when looking for emails, but it is rare.

It is really understanding which of the Thunderbird search methods you are using.

In most cases, people are using the 'Global Search' which tends to open in a tab not a window. So, I presume you are using the 'Find' > 'Search Messages' option which does use a separate window.

The majority of reasons for a search returning results which cannot then be opened is because the email does not exist. It may been deleted a long time ago, but the global database is out date or out of synch.

Sometimes, it is because the Anti-Virus scanned mbox files and tried to fix but did not realise there were index files. So the search uses the index data to get potential results, but the original email does not exist, so cannot be opened.

The global database may be out of date and require a rebuild, so I would do this so that your searches get more up to date results:
