Hi Community,

Immediately after I was hit by a site that appeared to be randsomware, where I had to force a close of my browser to shut down the page that was threatening to call the police if I didn't pay them zillions of dollars, my bookmarks toolbar began appearing for a second on start-up, and then disappearing. I ran a virus check using McAfee. Nothing. I checked my addins and extensions and nothing obvious was shown. It coincided with a Firefox update, so I have searched for answers surrounding the toolbar, and have renamed my xulstore.json file to xunstore.old, and restarted, but nothing. I have tried to manipulate the toolbar in customise, but am unable to find the icon, or move it to the top (no space existing), to put it back into place. I have tried to reset to default and turn the toolbar back on, and that has't worked either.

Greatful for any help!

You can check for problems with the sessionstore.jsonlz4 file in the Firefox profile folder that stores session data.

  • delete sessionstore.jsonlz4 and sessionstore.js

When sessionstore.jsonlz4 is deleted you lose pinned tabs and open tabs and you will have to recreate them, so if necessary make a note or bookmark them.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync temporarily during troubleshooting.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page
in case errors are reported close and restart Firefox and retry

See also:

If "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page cannot repair places.sqlite then remove all places.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from a recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

Hi Tycho, the easiest way to open your currently active Firefox profile folder is through the Troubleshooting Information page. That's because profile folders are on a hidden path in your Windows user profile folder.

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, on the Profile Folder row, click the "Open Folder" button. This should launch a new window listing various files and folders in Windows Explorer.

If you prefer to explore around the disk, make sure Windows is set to show you hidden files and folders: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/14201/windows-show-hidden-files

Two users in the following thread reported their problem with the Bookmarks Toolbar not appearing seems to be linked to using the "Restore Previous Session" option on the Options page:

Bookmarks toolbar isn't showing up

Many thanks.

I'll give it a whirl in a bit.

To OP:

Uncheck Restore Previous Session under Options. Then restart Firefox.
