If I enter any URL in the location bar and hit 'Return' nothing happens. This has only occurred since I upgraded to version 8.0

If I click on any external link for the same site e.g. on Google search results, then the page loads fine.

Start Firefox in Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
