That's a good question to ask about any add-on: what data does it send to the developers or anyone else. I believe that add-ons posted at addons.mozilla.org are checked to try to make sure they are not actively malicious (Review Process), but no system is perfect. Without a lot of knowledge about Firefox and computer code, reading reviews and searching for news on the web probably is the best double-check.
