Windows 7 Professional Windows Security Essentials

I clicked on the Firefox icon. The cursor changed from an arrow to a spinning wheel. Nothing happened. It stayed that way for 20 minutes until I went into the task manager and shut the program down.

I'm forced to use Internet Explorer and it's awful. Please help me.

Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

You can use one of these to start Firefox in Safe mode:

  • On Windows, hold down the Shift key while starting Firefox with a double-click on the Firefox desktop shortcut
  • On Mac, hold down the Options key while starting Firefox
  • Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

Tried to re-install ?

  1. Uninstall Firefox from your computer
  2. How to download and install Firefox on Windows

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

Thanks for responding. This at least caused something to change.

I went to

https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Firewalls

and followed the directions exactly. I went into Microsoft Windows Firewall and allowed it to accept firefox.exe.

I clicked on the Firefox icon. It loaded the "oops, well this is embarrassing" screen and prompted me to restore the previous session. I clicked no and it took me to the search page. And then it crashed. No key strokes worked. Nothing.

Any other advice?

We're sorry to hear that your Firefox seems to be crashing when you open it. Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.

  1. Press the following shortcut to get a Run window: [Windows] + [R]. This should bring up a window that contains a text field.
  2. In that text field, enter %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
  3. From that explorer window, double-click on the Mozilla folder, then double-click on Firefox and then on Crash reports. Double-click on submitted.
  4. Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to View > Arrange Icons by > Modified to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
  5. Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
  6. Paste each ID into the reply window on the forums.

Thanks in advance!

cor-el, I think it worked. I opened and closed Firefox several times now and browsed various sites.

You've saved me from the horrors of Internet Explorer and for that I'm grateful.

Thank you.
