Why am I being forced to upgrade Firefox?
The last time this happened I lost the use of my favorite add-ons and they haven't been fixed. I should be given the opportunity to opt out.

Mozilla doesn't "force" an update on you, you just didn't de-select the default preference for automatic installation of updates.
Tools > Options >> Advanced - Update
