This addon may offer something that could be useful to you. It offers 'Categories' and you can put different tags into different categories. Worth checking out to see if it is something to help situation. https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/tag-toolbar/

Manually altering the Tag list is a bit more complicated, hence why I suggest you look at using the addon. However................ After the initial five default tags, all other tags are in alphabetical order and will assigned sequential numbering starting with 6 - 9 which are the shortcut numbers. If you have more than that they may not be assigned a number.

Manually altering one so that it can take on the number 6 to be used as shortcut is a bit trickier, but not too difficult.

  • Menu app icon > Options/Preferences > General
  • Scroll to the bottom and click on 'Config Editor'
  • Accept the dragon warning :)
  • In search type : tags

Each tag will have two settings, one for name and one for colour. Let's pretend you have a tag called Urgent, but currently it has possibly no number assigned because it is low in the list and you would prefer it to be used immediately after the default ones.

Example: In the about config there will be two lines for the 'Urgent' tag

  • mailnews.tags.urgent.color with a colour set as #FF0000
  • mailnews.tags.urgent.tag with a name set as Urgent

right click in the 'about:config' area and select 'New' > 'String' Enter the preference name data but modify like this: mailnews.tags.1-urgent.tag so adding number 1 followed by a hyphen - do type this preference correctly. It will always be the same for the start: mailnews.tags. then followed by the name of tag and ending with .tag But basically you are copying what you had already and modifying it to tweak it's position in list. click on 'OK' At prompt, type name you will see in Tag list: Urgent click on 'OK'

Repeat for the colour setting: right click in the 'about:config' area and select 'New' > 'String' Enter the preference name data but modify like this: mailnews.tags.1-urgent.color click on OK then enter colour at prompt: #FF0000 click on 'OK'

Now you need to stop the original ones. mailnews.tags.urgent.color mailnews.tags.urgent.tag Right click on each line and select 'Reset'

Back in the folders where you can select tags, you will now find that 'Urgent' has moved up to number 6 and is now positioned below the five default tags.

If you are wanting to do this to several then I suggest you use a numbering system which would allow you insert a number in between. Example: mailnews.tags.100_TAGNAME.color mailnews.tags.100_TAGNAME.tag

mailnews.tags.200_TAGNAME.color mailnews.tags.200_TAGNAME.tag

Then if you later wanted to insert one inbetween you could use: mailnews.tags.150_TAGNAME.color mailnews.tags.150_TAGNAME.tag

and would not need to recreate in order to insert a new tag.

I'm not sure why this tag feature is not just built in to TB. I've used Tag Sequence Arranger for years. TH says the Tag Sequence Arranger wont work with new version. Can it be activated and used anyway?

Tag Toolbar / Tag Popup 2.1.5 is comparable with the new TB version?

Thank you for the reply :)

The 'Tag Popup 2.1.5' says it works with 78*, so it should work. It used to be called 'Tag Toolbar', but developers removed the necessary api to create it on a separate toolbar, hence why it was modified for Mail Extensions to work in version 78. For Thunderbird 78, install v2.x. From v2.0.0 tags are not displayed on toolbar due to the limitation of MailExtensions. Tags are shown in popup of the toolbar button. So, Tag Toolbar is renamed to Tag Popup. Author 's website: http://hogi.sakura.ne.jp/en/index.rhtml And blog page with good info: https://hogiblog.blogspot.com/2020/04/mailextensions-add-ons.html

It's worth a try because the categories option could work for you. I would create a backup anyway just before you install it. If you have issues then the author would like to know about it.
