When I click on the Firefox icon on my desktop nothing happens! It used to work fine!

We have used Mozilla Firefox for a long time. Recently it began taking longer and longer to load. Then a couple of days ago, it would not allow me to load anything other than the main page. Now when I click on it, nothing happens at all. I checked the Firewall settings and made sure Mozilla Firefox is an exception, I turned the computer on and off, ran system mechanic. Help!
