On my husband's laptop I tried to download the importexporttoolsng add on. I arrived at a download link on the mozilla website from a search on how to back up his emails in Thunderbird. I am not sure of the exact steps that led to it, but at some point early on, I was asked for a password. Not my email service provider password, but a Mozilla password. I was unaware that we had one, so clicked to say that I had forgotten it. Which seems to have locked me out of accessing the add on manager in Thunderbird. I have attached a screen shot of the error message. I assume the error message is caused by me clicking the forgotten password button?

I'm typing this on my laptop, because it seems to have no problem in logging in to both add the same add on to my Thunderbird (was able to add it in seconds) or logging in to this support forum without me knowing a password. (Even though it doesn't seem to have a password saved for it according to the saved passwords list.) This time I used the install an add on feature within Firefox, and wasn't asked for a password at any stage.

All I can glean from searching for answers is that I have to contact Mozilla for forgotten password problems, but I don't know how. Is there someone who can tell me how to contact Mozilla, or how to fix the problem the error message is giving me? Thanks.

You were browsing the Mozilla website via a browser, correct? I don't see how this is connected to Thunderbird's add-on manager which is accessible via Thunderbird's own Tools > Add-ons menu and NOT the browser. You do not need to log in to ANY account to install an add-on from the official Mozilla add-ons repository. In Thunderbird, go to Tools > Add-ons, type "ImportExportTools" in the search box at the top then press Enter. Which version of Thunderbird are you using (the one in the screenshot)?

Hi Stans, Thanks for such a quick response. To be honest, I'm not that savvy when it comes to this kind of thing. Initially I did a Google search to find out how to back up emails in Thunderbird. (Being unaware at that point in time that there was an add on, and that I could do it from within Thunderbird.) A thread on this support forum showed up in my search results, and I read that, clicked on the link there, and it took me to the download page on the Mozilla website. I clicked to download, and then my memory is not clear, other than at some point after saving the download file, I ended up on Thunderbird on the add on tab with the message I posted above. Also, at some point after saving the download file, I was asked for an email, then password to log in. It was a Mozilla log in page, not an email server log in. So I assumed that it was me clicking the forgot password button that caused the message. Sorry that I can't be more precise.

I'm wondering now if the password is coincidence, and nothing to do with it, because while waiting for a reply, I compared my version of Thunderbird with my husband's and I have 68.11.0 (32-bit) (on Windows 10), whereas his Thunderbird is 17. He is running windows 7, and we're trying to back up his emails before upgrading to 10. Both of the Thunderbird version windows state that the software is up to date. So could it actually be that?

My belief is that updating to Windows 10 shouldn't affect his emails, but you never know, and we want to back them up just in case.

Sorry, the screen shot is from my husband's laptop, the one running v 17.0.

Hi, having slept on the problem I did some more searching, and have found out how to navigate to the profile folder for Thunderbird, and have saved that instead of trying to figure out how to back up the files via the Thunderbird add ons. I'm hoping that with Windows 10 in, and a more up to date version of Thunderbird, that the add on problem will go away!

Yes, a backup copy of Thunderbird's current profile folder is adequate. Make sure you copy the profile folder while Thunderbird is NOT running. Tbird 17 is awefully outdated! You'll have to update to the new version in stages, that is, using intermediate versions until you get to the latest.

Thanks for the tips... will do.

Really appreciate your time and patience. Thank you.
