When I try to open websites, it switches to sites like "c.vindicosuite.com" or "b18.sitemeter.com", then stops. How do I stop this happening ?
This has been happening for some time on our own website - the site text loads, as does the first pic - but halfway through the second (always at that point), the screen goes blank, and the info bar says it is transferring to, or waiting for, either of these two sites above, but never the bars never get more than halfway. It makes no difference whether I try to load the website from scratch or from our bookmarks menu.
It's now started again, on the John Lewis site, when I try to move from a product to the product details. I've checked for Firefox updates for Mac OS X, but apparently none are available, even though I get notes that I'm using an outdated version.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions and some Preferences.
- Open websites will not be saved in Firefox versions lower than 25.
To Reset Firefox do the following:
- Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
- Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
- Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
- Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

According to your system details your using MAC OS X 10.4,

The last Firefox version that runs on Mac OS X 10.4 is Firefox 3.6.28.
Current Firefox versions require a Mac with an Intel processor and OS X 10.6 (Firefox 16 runs on Intel Mac OS X 10.5).
So best would be to update to Mac OS X 10.6 or at least 10.5 to be able to use more recent Firefox versions. http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/16.0.2/system-requirements/ http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/3.6.28/system-requirements/

Many thanks - but it looks like the system isn't up to accepting any Firefox updates. I tried the reset option, which told me that no updates were available, and in the process of looking for an update to Mac OS X, I got a message that it wasn't possible. I'll keep trying all the options, and many thanks to everyone who's helped !

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
- On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
- On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
- On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
- Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.
Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"
If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
