I forgot my primary password in TB 102... None of the directions have helped me to remove the present primary password. warning, I am 70 and need hand holding directions. The directions I have found so far have to do with an earlier version. Specifically, this does not exist in my version of Thunderbird: "Starting from the app menu button ≡ or the main menu, choose Tools -> Developer Tools -> Error Console."

That menu structure is part of 102, so I'm puzzled. However, you can invoke that pane by clicking cntl plus shift plus the letter j.

I hit cntl + shift + j and got the error console, but do not have that button, see (attached screenshot)

Hello @patnp

I don't see what the error console has to do with removing the master password. Did you try to uncheck 'Use a primary password' ? You have tio know the password(s) for your mail account(s) of course. Edit: Oops, cancel that. I did not read the doc carefully.

When I uncheck "use a Primary Password" it asks my current password. I do not know that.

The Directions (which are out of date) are:

Starting from the app menu button ≡ or the main menu, choose Tools -> Developer Tools -> Error Console.

Copy the text given below and paste it into the Console. The choice is determined by the version you are using.

If using a version prior to 78, copy and paste the following text:
   openDialog("chrome://pippki/content/resetpassword.xul")
If using version 78 or later, copy and paste the following text:
   openDialog("chrome://pippki/content/resetpassword.xhtml")

Click the Evaluate button. If you do not see an 'Evaluate' button, press Return or Enter on your keyboard. When prompted with the confirmation dialog box, click the Reset button.

not sure what is the problem; you seem to have entered the correct incantation, did you hit 'Enter' on it ?

All of the Directions I could find, including the above, are out of date. The Directions do not work on version 102. There is no "Tools -> Developer Tools -> Error Console.", but from the suggestion above, I hit ctrl + shift + j, which opened the Error Console, but inside there, there is no Evaluate button.

No one seems to have updated instructions. I am having to use Outlook for email now because I keep getting popups for the password if Thunderbird is open. I don't like Outlook. Is there another good alternative?

I don't see an evaluation button, but from the very instructions you posted: " If you do not see an 'Evaluate' button, press Return or Enter on your keyboard.". That's what I did. And it displayed the confirmation dialog box.

I do hit enter and I get this (attached). I don't get a reset option I just get this error that is in the window.

I just ran it again and got this: (attached)

This is puzzling. First, you state that tools>developer tools>error console does not exist in 102, but it does. Second, I set up a primary password and followed the steps to remove it and the process presents a popup window with 'reset' as documented - So, the process works. All I can figure is that there is something corrupted in your installation. Possibly installing Thunderbird on top of what you have might correct any corruption (?) At the error console, here is what I entered:

    openDialog("chrome://pippki/content/resetpassword.xhtml")

@patnp I see. In the upper right of the window where you entered this instruction, there is a X. Click on it and it will close this window. Then in the remaining big window, you will see again the magical instruction, hit Enter and it will display the famous dialog.

I opened the Error console. clicked on debug. entered in "openDialog("chrome://pippki/content/resetpassword.xhtml")". The "reset primary password" window came up. It set that my primary password was reset. That was successful. Thanks guys!

Suggestion: The program should be reset so that the next person with this challenge, will be able to tend to it easier.

BTW, I have been favoring Mozilla for most of 20 years. It seems like an honest effort to help people.

All's well that end's well. :)
