I don't understand what you're talking about. What has password got to do with your update issue? You need to be way more specific about your problem.

Check with your email provider about the required server settings. If they differ to what Thunderbird detected automatically use manual configuration.

I tried that too, not to avail....

It does not help stating that you tried something. You'd need to state what exactly you did and what happened.

I get invitations to install a newer version of TB. I am in 102.2.2.

When I download and install the "newer" version, I get the screen I copied. I fill in my email address, my password. The systems finds my IMAP and SMTP. However, then it says "checking password" and remains ther. Same thing when i click "manual configuration" and fill in the IMAP and SMTP myself.

Meanwhile TB 102.2.2 works well and when I look in Help About It says there is no update available. But still once in a while i get the invitation to upgrade....

Updates for the Thunderbird program are completely separate from you wanting to create a mail account. It sounds like you have installed a completely different version in a different location which then auto launches and is using a different profile and hence wants you to create a mail account.

re :When I download and install the "newer" version,

I'm not clear on exactly what you are doing at this point. Are you actually going to https://www.thunderbird.net/ and then getting a completely new download and install ? If yes, then it sounds like you are installing a second copy of Thunderbird. If using Windows OS: Do you have a copy of 'Mozilla Thunderbird' folder in both of these locations: C:// Program Files/Mozilla Thunderbird C:// Program Files(x86)/Mozilla thunderbird

If the one in 'C:// Program Files' folder has a newer date for 'Mozilla Thunderbird' folder then that is the most recent install. It means the original one is using C:// Program Files(x86)/ folder.

Exit Thunderbird Delete the 'Mozilla Thunderbird' folder from C:// Program Files/ folder Then empty the computer 'Recycle Bin'

Now check the 'Thunderbird' shortcut icon.

  • Right click on 'Thunderbird' shortcut icon and select 'Properties'

Does it say:

  • Target: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe"
  • Start in: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird"

If yes then it is ok.

If no:

  • Delete the thunderbird shortcut icon
  • Access: C:// Program Files(x86)/'Mozilla Thunderbird' folder
  • You should see 'thunderbird.exe' file.
  • Right click on it and select to create shortcut
  • It should say it needs to put shortcut on Desktop - ok
  • Now use that new shortcut to start Thunderbird.

In Thunderbird Menu icon > Help > About Thunderbird Does it now have a button that says click it to install newer version, if yes click on it.

It is dated september 2022 that is when I installed 102.2.2 C:// Program Files(x86)/Mozilla thunderbird Yes and it is dated begin of October that is when I started trying to install the "newer" version.

What now?

How do you start Thunderbird? Do you use a Shortcut icon? If yes, please check it uses this: Right click on 'Thunderbird' shortcut icon and select 'Properties' Target: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" Start in: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird"

then you know it is starting up the most recent download.

However, this newer version is currently asking you to create a mail account and this is probably because it has created a new profile in the default location. It is not aware of the profile name you have previously been using.

By default the profile should be in this location:

  • C://Users/User Name/Appdata/Roaming/Thunderbird/Profiles/'profile name' folder

You may discover there are two profile names in that 'Profiles' folder or maybe you moved the profile name folder to a different location?

Start the latest version. Do not try to create a mail account.

  • Menu icon > Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • Under 'Application Basics' near the bottom - Profiles' - click on 'about:profiles'

it opens in a new tab

It will list all the 'profiles'. The one currently set as default is the new one.

Do you see more profiles listed below? If yes: Do you see one which has the 'Root Directory:' pointing to your original profile name ? If yes: below it will be some buttons.

  • Click on the 'Set as default' button and then click on 'Launch Profile' button.

It will open in a new window. Now close the original thunderbird window. Does it show all the original mail accounts and folders etc?

If no: You only see the one default profile and it is not your original profile Then you need to create a new profile and point it to where you have stored the original profile name folder.

  • Click on 'Create a New Profile' button
  • Click on 'Next'
  • It will offer a 'Default User' as a name which is as good as any.
  • Click on 'Choose Folder' button
  • Locate the profile name folder which you were using in version 102.2.2
  • Select the folder and click on 'Select Folder' button
  • Click on 'Finish'

The 'Default User' profile should now appear in the 'about:profiles' list. below it will be some buttons.

  • Click on the 'Set as default' button and then click on 'Launch Profile' button.

It will open in a new window. Now close the original thunderbird window. Does it show all the original mail accounts and folders etc?
