I set Thunderbird up for the first time earlier today and wrongly opted for POP. I realise now that it means I can't see my Sent folder, etc, so I'd like to change to IMAP. Unfortunately the article explaining how to do this on your website does not relate to the newest version of Thunderbird, as installed today. I've tried deleting the programme and reinstalling but it's remembering that I chose POP and not letting me start with a clean slate. Please can you help me with this, as I'd love to use Thunderbird!

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound negative about the article (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/switch-pop-imap-account).

You found the correct article.

Open the File > New > Existing account menu

If the menu bar is hidden press Alt or F10 to bring it up.

What would be my best strategy please - should I delete the program and also the profile files and then re-install Thunderbird

No, just follow the instructions from the article.

or can I just create a new IMAP account somehow within Thunderbird and then delete the previous POP account?

That's essentially what the article describes and what david already suggested.

What article? Please post a link. What exactly is your issue with the article?

Profile files are stored separately from the Thunderbird program files. The program files are static and do not change (except when you upgrade the Thunderbird application version). Because we store profile and program files separately, you can uninstall Thunderbird without losing your messages and settings, and if something goes wrong with a Thunderbird update your information will still be available. It also means that you don't have to reinstall Thunderbird in order to delete your information or troubleshoot a problem. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data

I suggest creating the IMAP acccount, and then delete the POP account afterwards. Really, it's that simple. As an aside, the sent folder for POP is readily viewed from within TB, so that statement is puzzling.

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound negative about the article (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/switch-pop-imap-account). It's just that I couldn't seem to find the pathway File/New/Existing Account in the version of Thunderbird I downloaded today. What would be my best strategy please - should I delete the program and also the profile files and then re-install Thunderbird or can I just create a new IMAP account somehow within Thunderbird and then delete the previous POP account? You'll have worked out by now that I'm not very IT savvy, so would really appreciate your advice.

I still suggest installing IMAP and then deleting POP. That's the simple path.
