TBird laggy and slow, and getting worse

Hi Folks,

I've read other posts for the same issue, and so far none of the suggested fixes have worked, or just aren't applicable (I don't use *any* calendar apps, for example... those are on my phone.)

As I'm typing, the cursor does not advance, until after a second or two it shoots way over, displaying what I was typing while it was taking a nap. It's very slow to advance to the next email up if I "up arrow" to read the next one. Now, it's even slow to scroll down the folder pane when I try to drag the scroll bar. It's just slow to respond to much of anything, across the board.

I've started TBird with all add-ons disabled, and I've turned off the "Global search and indexer" function. Neither of these has improved things in the least, and it's actually worse than before I did these things.

I *DO* have maybe 60 or 65 sub-folders dangling off the account, and there are a LOT of saved emails in them. Would saving those emails to disk or a USB stick or somewhere else and 'removing' them from TBird do anything to speed things up? It's really getting to the point where I'm reluctantly considering looking for an alternative to TBird unless I can get this cleared up... even *mostly* cleared up.

I'm really not willing to have to start Win10 in 'safe' mode just to get the email working like it should. I have enough trouble with Windows already without adding another 'search for answers' to the mix. No other apps are behaving like this, just TBird, so I'm reluctant to immediately point the finger at Microsoft. I'd rather exhaust all options within TBird before messing with Windows.

Thanks for any ideas!

Hello there kharisma. We have read your message. We try to help you.

Your Thunderbird software is slow and laggy. Did you get some error codes? Suddenly a pop-up with text?

Mostly of the time it s a good point to backup your folders, oke. Yes by usb or ssd is oke.

Manually Backup Thunderbird Emails Open up Start Menu or Windows Explorer and browse to %appdata%.

The full path will be C:\Users\username\Appdata\Roaming on most Windows installations. Scroll down and find the Thunderbird folder.

If you don’t see the AppData folder, make sure you have Show Hidden Files, Folder, and Drives unchecked in Folder Options.

Right-click the Thunderbird and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder

Wait a few minutes for your Thunderbird folder to be copied and compressed into a zip archive. Your original folder will remain exactly where it was; the zip file is just a copy.

Now you have Thunderbird completely backed up! So if something happens, all you need to know is how to restore from the backup.

Windows safe mode disables anti-virus software. This is a troubleshooting step, not a solution.
