New tab settings lost with latest update

Today, with the latest update, I was offered 'Colorways' and to my regret, I accepted it. Either 'Colorways' or the update itself has wiped my settings for new tabs — and possibly other settings as well, but this was the first change I noticed.

This isn't a question that needs an answer; it'll be a simple process, I'm sure, and with a few minutes of research I'll figure out how to re-set new tabs to be blank, as I've always preferred. It's a mild complaint, that's all.

Updates and/or Mozilla-hyped features like Colorways should not override user preferences. I'll be more vigilant about saying 'no' to such suggestions in the future.

Hi, Colorways are new themes for the toolbar area. You can switching among these on the Add-ons page. See: Use themes to change the look of Firefox.

Changing themes does NOT affect your new tab page setting. If you lost that setting, did your Firefox perform a Refresh? Note: I am definitely NOT recommending that. More info on Refresh in the following article: Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings.

Occasionally a system update or permissions problem will trigger Firefox creating a whole new profile folder, without any of your previous data or settings. Signing in to your Firefox Account might bring back some of it, but not everything.

If you think that might have happened:

First, if you haven't already, try closing out of Firefox and doing a normal Windows shutdown and restart to complete any pending updates and release any file locks.

If Firefox again starts up without your data, could you check whether your stuff is available in a different profile, as follows:

Profile Manager Page

Inside Firefox, type or paste about:profiles in the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it.

This page should list at least one profile and could list many. (Each profile has two folders and one or more buttons. Do not use any Remove buttons!)

The profile that Firefox is currently using will have this:

This is the profile in use and it cannot be deleted.

Do you have any other profile(s) listed on this page? If so, you can check whether it is the one you were using recently by clicking its Launch profile in new browser button.

If it isn't what you want, simply close that new window.

If it IS what you want, back on the about:profiles page, click the Set as default profile button for that profile so Firefox uses it automatically at the next startup.

I posted a cranky complaint, and you wrote a far more thorough response than my post deserved. A tip of my hat, sir — appreciated.

My profile seems unchanged, other than new tabs opening with Firefox's preferred page instead of blank, which I've easily repaired. If the update didn't do it, I dunno what did — I've been a new-tabs-blank guy for as long as I've been Firefoxing, which feels like decades. I'll put it down as "weird things happen" and be glad it wasn't the major glitch you described.

Grazi again. Peace over and out.
